A Thousand Words and Other Pictures
In this inaugural New York exhibition, Jim Johnson will show A Thousand
Words and Other Pictures at the Amos Eno Gallery from February 4-28.
Language, graphic form, typography, integrated media, generative
composition, these are the areas of studio research that have engaged Jim
Johnson for over 30 years. Trained as a painter, Johnson's work has taken
various forms; including paintings, drawings, books, prints, sculpture,
interactive and Internet forms. Throughout, the relationship of language
and images has been a constant focus.
A Thousand Words has been exhibited at the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung
Ludwig Wien, Vienna, Austria, the Denver Art Museum and in galleries in
Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Boulder. Part of the permanent collection of the
Denver Art Museum, A Thousand Words can also be experienced interactively
on the Internet at http://spot.colorado.edu/~johnsoja/1KWords.html. Its
analog form is featured in this exhibition of several typographical
renderings of alphabetical, conceptual and procedural works of visual art.
Jim Johnson, the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History of
University of Colorado at Boulder, has been a member of the Painting and
Drawing faculty since 1970. He developed the department's Integrated Media
and Computer Imaging programs and produced over 60 video interviews with
participants in the Department's Visiting Artist Program. His work is
represented in numerous collections including, the Museum of Modern Art,
N.Y, the Denver Art Museum and the Minneapolis Museum of Fine Arts.
A reception for the artist will be held on February 7th between 4:00 and 7:00
PM at the gallery.
The Amos Eno Gallery at 530 W. 25th St. is open Wednesday through Saturday
