Electrical Walks Basel. Electromagnetic Soundwalks at Dreispitz and Inner City Basel
In "Electrical Walks", Christina Kubisch renders the invisible networks of electromagnetic signals audible. The project was realized by the artist for the exhibition Sensing Place. Mediatizing the Urban Landscape. Basel's hidden electromagnetic phenomena are uncovered by two walks - one takes part in the inner city of Basel, the other is at the Dreispitz site. Light systems, transformers, ATMs, security systems, cell phones, antennas, or computers - sound spaces that are imperceptible without technical help - provide a sound spectacle of exceptional presence and establish access to an extraordinary aspect of a seemingly familiar environment. With custom-made headphones equipped with built-in induction coils and a map that indicates the routes marked with "hot spots" where the signals are particularly strong or intriguing, the German artist sends us off on a walk through the inner city of Basel and the Dreispitz site to explore the inaudible acoustic phenomena of urban space.
