Zhang Huan: Sydney Buddha
8 January–15 March 2015

Created with 20 tonnes of incense ash and standing at over five metres tall, Sydney Buddha is a meditation on the brevity of life and the cycles of renewal and destruction. Made of two parts: an aluminium sculpture and an ash casting of its interior. The works are installed facing each other, however, as time passes, one of them is destroyed. For over two decades internationally renowned artist Zhang Huan has examined contemporary life through an engagement with the traditions and rituals which are central to Buddhist, Chinese and Tibetan histories.

Sydney Festival and performance space present
Endings
8-11 January 2015

Part chamber concert, part performance work, Endings explores the experiences that cluster around death, dying and the afterlife. This immersive work by Tamara Saulwick features the voice of Paddy Mann (Grand Salvo), an electro acoustic score by Peter Knight and design by Ben Cobham (bluebottle).

Spongebob Squaretimes
8-17 January

Shooting still images in Times Square, New York City, photographer Greg Barrett also recorded a short burst of video. Checking the footage later, he realised he’d captured not only a surging slice of life in the Big Apple’s centre, but someone in a SpongeBob SquarePants costume trying to attract the attention and generosity of passers-by for a solitary 45 minutes.

This inadvertent depiction of loneliness and isolation in a bustling city is accompanied by two pianolas providing a soundtrack of ten Holt’s cult piece Canto Ostinato. Music composed by Simeon ten Holt.

Inside There Falls
8-17 January

An installation in the form of a shimmering labyrinth, Inside There Falls invites audiences to individually explore and seek out its secrets. In this astonishing creation from UK-based artist Mira Calix, the walls speakmusic, voice and dance converge into a profound and fully immersive experience. Visually and aurally sublime, it features choreography by Sydney Dance Company’s Rafael Bonachela and narration by Hayley Atwell.

Co-commissioned by Brett Clegg, Gretel Packer and Catriona & Simon Mordant AM. Supported by Andrew Rothery and Julia Champtaloup.
