C&H art space proudly presents the solo exhibition of Erik de Bree: With perfect nonchalance.
In this exhibition Erik de Bree will present two of his newest series: ‘wallpaper paintings’ and the ‘patterns’ series. The ‘wallpaper paintings’ serie started in 2013, when he covered the walls of his studio with wallpaper after which he removed parts again – in first instance only as a background for his paintings. He was fascinated by the concept and elaborated it into paintings. After seeing delapidated garage doors during a trip to the Azores he got even more inspired to develop this idea. He now even produces his own wallpaper with patterns created with found and made objects. The ‘patterns’ series came from the renewed interest of De Bree in painting, evoked by his experiments with the self-created wallpaper. He applies acrylic paint on a glass plate, cuts shapes into it and fills the holes with other colors, so a pattern occurs. The crackeling, breaking and warping of the paint is an important aspect of these works.
The deconstruction, demolishment and manipulation of images is a central aspect in the work of Erik de Bree. He started his career with making his so-called ‘langolier paintings': traditionally constructed landscape paintings that are taken apart in a second fase, so a pattern of negative space occurs that enters into a relationship with the remaining parts of the painting. Later he started to work with photographs, which he tears, soaks, paints and removes the pigment from to erase the original context of the image.
In his working process the application and removal of elements are equally important, and coincidence is a significant factor. By removing pieces from the different media he uses, a chain of contingency is started until the image occurs. Furthermore, his work is not about the passing of time or the romance of decay, but about catching the coincidential and creating space and context for the unexpected.
Erik de Bree (1977) lives and works in Haarlem. He studied at the Willem de Kooning academy in Rotterdam and Rietveld academy in Amsterdam and is co-founder and curator of the artist-run space ‘horizonverticaal’ in Haarlem. He has been part of several solo and group exhibitions and his works are in a.o. the Caldic collection, the collection of Pieter and Marieke Sanders and several company colections. In 2014 his monography ‘Erik de Bree op Sao Miguel’ was published by Waanders publishers.

PROJECT ROOM: FLORIAN BRAAKMAN
Field trip
In his work Florian Braakman creates a visual dialogue between the photographs within series and an associative dialogue with the spectator. He works intuitively and gets inspired by the simplest every day things, but also by broader themes as consumerism, globalism, longing and beauty. Through his photographs we can read a history of daily life situations that are in some way the artist’s personal diary in images. His photos are a means of physical expression and a representation of real life, in which a door to fantasy and imagination is open. It is reality in an abstract and crazy way.
Florian Braakman graduated in 2013 at the Royal Academie of Art in The Hague. He has been part of several exhibitions both inside the Netherlands and abroad. With his latest photo book “She comes in Colors”, which was nominated for two awards, he presents a visual diary of love in thoughts.
