Take it or leave it

Taking the hectic tempo of the city, traffic, pollution and the threat of the extinction of natural resources into account, is there really a place where we can freely breathe?

Young curators Melike Bayık & Mergüze Günay are looking an answer to this question with the participation of 10 artists…

The urbanization process which ignores nature and works against it has created and ironic modern existence that forces us into living in uniform boxes and replacing our longing for nature by different ways of substitution. The buildings which look like they have dropped from the sky into emptiness also reshape the collective consciousness in their image: the old agricultural sites are now replaced by fancy and eye-catching constructions and shopping malls that washes away our memory. Masses ae “driven away” from their local cultures and forced to adapt to an antagonizing upper class culture and to choose between an absolute alienation or taking refuge in utopic dreams. As the city life motivates the desire to return to nature, whether there is an ideal place to get back to is the expression of a deadlock. Quest for a possibility of life that is evolving and being exhausted…
Watching the trees that conduct and orchestra of wind… Will it be possible to watch the sky and stars as one is laying down the land?

As a continuation of the exhibition “Pardon, Which Floor?” whose intention was to come up with a rhetoric on urbanization, the exhibition “Take it or leave it” can be visited at MERKUR between February 10th – March 7th, 2015.
