A photographic exhibition featuring Camino, new works from his epic cathedral series, and Chinese Portraits, the culmination of a seven-year composite photo project.
Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Roland Fischer featuring Camino, new works from his epic cathedral series, and Chinese Portraits, the culmination of a seven-year composite photo project.
Following Fischer's portrayal of gothic and baroque monuments throughout Europe and Vietnam, last spring Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea invited him to northern Spain to photograph catholic cathedrals along the Road (or Camino) to Santiago. Here, Fischer's signature technique of superimposing interior and exterior views becomes more layered, fragmented, and altogether complex. At up to nine feet tall, each work captures the cathedral's vast architectural structure but emphasizes vivid colors and abstracted ornamentation, expressing at once volume and transparency, mass and weightlessness, surface and depth, the material and the spiritual.
Fischer's travels east to communist China inspire a more political subject matter. His collective portraits consist of hundreds of headshots of soldiers, farmers, steel workers, and students, evenly tiled like postage stamps into seemingly infinite banners. Each person is microscopically captioned with a name, imploring us to acknowledge the individual in his own right despite the strong association of his communal government and occupation.
Born in 1958, Munich based photographer Roland Fischer was recently named by Photo Technik International one of Germany's top ten photographers alongside Demand, Gursky, Ruff, and Struth. Last year, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Compostela debuted Camino, and Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, mounted a major retrospective of Fischer's work. Both institutions published substantial catalogues.
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 6-8 PM
