The exhibitions for the month of May: Maureen McCarron, R. Sawan White, Jessica Glickman.
Richmond, VA— artspace, located at Zero East 4th Street within Plant Zero, in the recently designated Arts District in Manchester in Richmond City, is pleased to announce its exhibitions for the month of May.
In the Main Gallery this May, New York artist Maureen McCarron exhibits Angels as Archetypes, a series of works including egg tempera on board and handmade paper pulp paintings. Incorporating Western angels as well as Asian guardians while embracing Outsider Art, McCarron’s paintings were originally about AIDS; however, prior to 9/11 events, the works also now address her witnessing the collapse of the Trade Towers. Her most current work is influenced by a recent internship at the American Indian Museum which is only a few blocks from the Ground Zero site. Both ghosts and guides, these images evoke the archetypal messenger/ monster from the collective unconscious and her own personal mythologies. McCarron has exhibited frequently throughout New York City and California, as well as in several European cities.
Local artist, R. Sawan White returns to Artspace this May, showing her recent series, Entries. Entries is an exhibition of paintings chronicling the subtleties of nondescript living colliding with moments of unforeseen understanding. The work of R. Sawan White has developed out of a desire to express the complexities of identity – the varying levels on which a person lives, and the words that define a person. Many of the pieces have arisen from daily conversation – the struggle to define oneself through language, and the absurdity of a word misspoken. Her use of paints and waxes both intrigues the viewer with its texture and challenges him with its depth. The concepts of intaglio printing penetrate the paintings creating images which hold the freshness of paint and the layering achieved so beautifully through printmaking. Each piece is a small moment, a lapse in conversation, which catches the eye.
In the Minds Eye, a series of collages by Jessica Glickman, will be on display this May. Evolving over the course of one year, these works evoke a range of emotions, depicting the human form in varying degrees of sickness and health. The life cycle plays an integral role in the series, as the pieces and the viewers embark on a full circle journey. Glickman, a published illustrator and well-shown artist, is a graduate of Pratt Institute.
The exhibits open Friday, May 7th. The First Friday Opening Reception is from 6:30-10 pm, May 7, 2004. A second reception will be held on the Fourth Friday, May 28th from 7-9 pm. All exhibits will close Sunday, May 30, 2004. Artspace is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 12 to 4 pm and by appointment.
