Selected Works. Well known for her expressionistic abstract painting, Vos continues her explorations of complex pictorial space in these paintings. Vos deftly balances improvisational gesture and formal composition in her work, the subtle structure giving form to the active surfaces. Ranging in size from just under 2 feet to 6 feet in height, the interwoven compositions are replete with lyricism and mood.
Selected Works
San Francisco painter Barbara Vos opens an exhibition of selected paintings, sponsored by Brian Gross Fine Art, in the lobby gallery at One Post Street on Monday, May 17, 2004.
The intense movement of paint on the canvas fluctuates between tactile opaqueness and transparent layers, infusing the surfaces with light. The laden density of additive paint and the sheerness created by breathy, gestural brushstrokes conveys an intensity of movement, expressively oscillating between tension and balance. Rich with spontaneous gestures, the densely layered surfaces reveal intricate canvases full of dynamism and emotion.
A native of New York City, Barbara Vos is primarily a self-taught painter. She pursued drawing at the Art Students League, NYC, commercial art at the Minneapolis School of Art, and undergraduate work at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. Vos was a 1996 recipient of of a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Art in Painting and she participated in the Djerassi Artist in Residence Program, Woodside, CA in 1994. The show continues through September 10, 2004.
