Peter Zimmermann examines modernist painting traditions through the lens of digital technology. Using various computer filters, he deconstructs images to invoke pointillist and abstract expressionist pictorial strategies with a hint of postmodern irony. (...) Hes unique technical method utilizes digital process to achieve sensational visual effects. (...) To him the source image is usually irrelevant ; primaly concerned with the abstraction that can result from its diverse manipulations. (...) Zimmermann projects his final digital file directly onto the canvas, then painstakingly fills in the outlines with numerous layers of pigmented and dyed acrylic resin, a technique he developed some years earlier for his large-scale replicas of glossy art book covers. Essentially a synthetic uptdate of the old master glazing technique, his resin imparts vibrant color resulting from the refraction of light off the white canvas below the transparent plastic layers. (...) Through a combination of technical and conceptual prowess, Zimmermann relates the Medieval tradition of stained glass to the contemporary technology of the computer window. While their abstract forms are automated and processed, within their candied surfaces Zimmermanns paintings demonstrate the potential for sublime experience held by technology.
