Living and Working in Vienna. Contemporary Art in Vienna at the turn of the Millenium.

The final major exhibition to be shown at the 'Art Container' on Karlsplatz before the inauguration of the new Kunsthalle Wien building in the Museum Quarter in May 2001 will be 'Living and Working in Vienna', a project featuring 25 contemporary artists who either live in Vienna or thematize Vienna contexts in their work.
An international team of curators (Paulo Herkenhoff, Maaretta Jaukkuri and Rosa Martínez) has undertaken to explore the situation of 'Art in Vienna', conducting a field study of the present-day intellectual and cultural climate of this city and the elements that make it. This view from outside is directed to art trends, positions and concepts, looking for the cutting edge and novelty, for the controversial and the suggestive.
The artists participating were invited to produce new works for the exhibition. Vienna keeps reappearing in them ever and again as a local or mental reference point. 'Living and Working in Vienna' thus becomes a platform for a mobile art scene between taking stock and taking action.

Artists Participating:
Thomas Baumann, Wolfgang Capellari, Oliver Croy / Ricarda Denzer, Julius Deutschbauer, Paul Divjak, Manfred Erjautz, gelatin, Siggi Hofer, Edgar Honetschläger, Anna Jermolaewa, Ruth Kaaserer, Komar & Melamid, Elke Krystufek, Guillermo Kuitca, Ulrike Lienbacher, Lomographische Gesellschaft, museum in progress, Florian Pumhösl, Werner Reiterer, Lois Renner, Bülent Sangar, Fridolin Schönwiese, Roland Rust / Johannes Schweiger, Laurent Mignonneau & Christa Sommerer, Erwin Wurm, Gregor Zivic
