PROJECT ROTTERDAM

“Show me the creative force of Rotterdam” said Sjarel Ex when he was appointed Managing Director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The exhibition called ‘Project Rotterdam’ is the response. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen gathered a large number of artists and designers to show the public the current artistic barometer on Rotterdam art and design.

The exhibition ‘Project Rotterdam’ puts the dynamic field of force in Rotterdam art and design on the map. In 1984 the then Managing Director Wim Beeren used a similar tool to test the artistic climate in Rotterdam with his ‘Art from Rotterdam’ exhibition. This time, works are on display by visual artists who have been living in the city for some time, as well as by artists from the province and abroad who are using the city as a temporary operating base. The central theme is to express how these artists, each in their own way, relate to the city. Also designers in Rotterdam are finding inspiration in the seaport, looking at the world with an open mind. They often work with design icons, reinterpret classic examples and recycle old materials to create new designs.

The favourable climate for establishing a business as well as the low-cost and spacious studios in Rotterdam are great incentives for newcomers and experienced artists and designers. For artists, Rotterdam is an attractive city where they can go into hiding and yet find ample opportunities to work with others. Rotterdam has a striking number of (informal) cooperatives in the form of artists’ initiatives. Designers are also having an extensive network structure where individuals are seeking collaboration to bundle their creativity.

Joep van Lieshout
In line with this exhibition, the museum invited artist Joep van Lieshout/Studio for a presentation of his own work as well as the work from the museum’s collection. This presentation is the first of a series in which Rotterdam artists are invited to express their vision on the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen collection.

Fucking Good Art will be publishing its tenth edition in book form as part of ‘Project Rotterdam’. Fucking Good Art is a ‘zine' its creators are regarding as a tool to map the Rotterdam artistic world.
