"Imprint" a new exhibition by accomplished photographer and filmmaker Yuichi Hibi premieres at Marcello Marvelli Fine Arts Gallery. The solo exhibition featuring 16 black and white photographs shot by Hibi throughout Japan, marks the artist's first New York solo show.

"Imprint" consists of a series of dramatic, almost cinematic images captured on dark and rainy nights between 1993 and 1999 during Hibi's periodic jaunts to his native country. The images convey enigmatic spaces, where dark environments are infiltrated by sudden, sensuous occurrences of light that transform ordinary objects into mysterious shapes.

To create his singular vision of stylized film noir, Hibi pushes the film all the way during the darkroom process using AGFA Brovira paper stock (which is no longer produced). The result is a striking composition of incredibly rich darkness, where stingy moments of light act as an emotional climax within the confines of an urban nightmare.

Yuichi Hibi, who has developed an enthusiastic cult following in New York and Tokyo, graduated from Tokyo's famed Nikkatsu School in 1985. In 1986, Hibi joined Japan's highly-acclaimed theater group Bungaku-za, where he performed in many productions of classic works of drama. In 1987, Producer David Puttnam (Midnight Express, Killing Fields, My Life, So Far) asked Hibi to join a Japan-U.S. exchange film study program he founded where Hibi learned the techniques of the cinematic masters. Hibi studied directing in Puttnam's program with Killing Fields director Roland Joffe. Many of the film principles Hibi learned proved to be a major source of inspiration in Hibi's later photographic art.

Hibi spent the next ten years acting and directing in Japan, and in 1988 moved to New York to perfect his craft. During this fertile period, Hibi won a pivotal role in Akira Kurosawa's internationally-renowned film, Ran. After Ran, Hibi divided his creative time between photography and filmmaking.

Marcello Marvelli Fine Arts is the latest gallery for showcasing cutting-edge contemporary photography, sculpture, and painting in the red-hot art district of Chelsea, New York. This will be the gallery first exhibition. Founded by its sole proprietor, Florence-born art-historian Marcello Marvelli, the gallery will exhibit new works by Andrea Frank and Paul Amenta following Hibi¹s exhibition.
