Pioneer Collectors

Exhibition organised by the National Galleries of Scotland and Compton Verney

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) has rightly become one of the most famous artists in the
history of art, but he is said to have sold only a handful of paintings during his
lifetime. This fascinating exhibition, which will be the first Van Gogh exhibition
in Scotland for over fifty years, will explore British collectors' interest in the
artist, beginning with his close relationship with the Glasgow dealer Alexander
Reid.

Van Gogh and Britain: Pioneer Collectors will comprise 30 works by Van Gogh.
Highlights include the beautiful Still Life with Oleanders (Metropolitan Museum of
Art, New York) which was owned by the educationalist Sir Michael Sadler; the
Wheatfield, with Cypresses - which was bought by the National Gallery, Millbank (the
future Tate Gallery), with money from the Courtauld Fund; and Enclosed Field with
Ploughman (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), which was once owned by William Boyd,
Managing Director of Keiller's jam factory in Dundee.

There will be photo, filming and interview opportunities. For further information
please contact the National Galleries of Scotland Press Office on 0131 624
