Aller/Retour
To close the 2006 theme, which aimed to establish close links between artists
of different generations and to grasp the evolution of a constantly changing
artistic quest, we have devoted the exhibitions of this last event of the year to
painting.
These allers/retours let us understand the genesis of creation, its differences
and its permanence by observing how creation unfolds. Such an experience
may not be evident in each case, although certain major affinities are clearly
perceptible. We should always attempt to understand the multiple investigations of our time and anticipate the major issues of tomorrow.
As a starting point for this aller/retour in painting, we chose concrete art which
made its appearance as of the 1940s in Zurich with RICHARD PAUL LOHSE, VERENA LOEWENSBERG. Their pictorial offspring were the productions of CHRISTOPH
GOSSWEILER, LUIGI LURATI, OLIVIER MOSSET and PETER STAMPFLI.
The exhibition closes with a new generation of abstract painters: FRANCIS
BAUDEVIN, STE'PHANE DAFFLON, PHILIPPE DECRAUZAT, CHRISTIAN FLOQUET,
LAURENCE PITTET. This group of Swiss artists represents a selection that lays no
claim to being an exhaustive historic view and is just one of a number of possible versions. The works of these painters are keen to enter upon a dialogue
with the works of other generations, between past and present references.
In counterpoint to a certain form of abstract painting and by proposal of the
new director of the Kunsthalle in St Gallen, Giovanni Carmine, in the PROJECT
ROOM we will present successive solo exhibitions of three artists whose work
focuses on figurative painting: Georgian painter ANDRO WEKUA (03.12 - 31.12),
Armenian ARMEN ELOYAN (04.01 - 04.02) and American DAVID CHIEPPO (08.02 -11.03).
In parallel to the exhibitions, a pluridisciplinary program linking literature, performance art, theater and music is scheduled for our RENDEZ-VOUS DU JEUDI
SOIR and SE'ANCE DU DIMANCHE venues. Some of the highlights will be:
THEATRE
We will be happy to host the master of the solo performance PETER WYSSBROD
(11.01 - 19.01). Plastician, author and actor, this selftaught artist, born in
Bienne in 1938, has throughout his 30 year career unceasingly questioned and
challenged both theatrical conventions and the public’s expectations. On this
occasion he will perform his own work Entr’acte (11 and 12.01) and Samuel
Beckett’s play La dernie're bande (Krapp’s Last Tape) (18 and 19.01)
MUSIC: VOIX DES ALPES
From Ljubljana to Nice, the Alpine arc offers us a rich inheritance of songs and
vocal music. Long classified simply as traditional music, these songs and other
vocal techniques, such as yodling, have experienced a rebirth since the 1990s
and inspired a number of contemporary artists.
The VOIX DES ALPES cycle wishes to highlight four groups who take part in the
renewal: the LAUTERBURG - NEUHAUS DUO (25.01), VOX VOKALENSEMBLE (08.02),
ERIKA & ROOTS OF COMMUNICATION (22.02) and BETTY LEGLER (08.03).
LITERATURE
An evening commemorating the 50th anniversary of Robert Walser’s death will
feature artists in various disciplines and of different nationalities. They will
speak about the relationship they entertain with this writer (07.12).
Throughout the event, the AVEZ-VOUS QUELQUE CHOSE A' LIRE? encounters continue to present Swiss authors reading from their works (in the library).
CINEMA
The Swiss Cultural Center pays tribute to film director DANIEL SCHMID, who
passed away recently. His films had a profound influence on the history of
Swiss cinema (21.12, 07.01 and 11.02). Various films will be scheduled around
the exhibition, either selected by artists such as PHILIPPE DECRAUZAT (04 and
18.02), about artists such as Richard Paul Lohse (25.02), or made by artists
such as OLIVIER MOSSET with Zanzibar films (21.01 and 28.01).
