Gedi Sibony

Interested in the development of contemporary sculpture, American artist Gedi Sibony has created his trademark through a fearless yet lyrical reconstitution of manifactured items, including hollow core doors, plywood, carpet, cardboard and various castaways.

Sibony's pieces are usually parts of a larger installation. What may first appear to be an accidental assembly, Sibony's carefully crafted environments direct the viewer's gaze and movement, calling attention to sometimes precariously or awkwardly placed objects. Moving through Sibony's environments has a healing effect, allowing the spectator to witness the dialogue between the artist and the space while foregrounding the kibitzer's own physical encounter with the surroundings.

Speed is another fundamental element of Sibony's work. His sculptures appear to be a frozen or interrupted movement, giving the work a feeling of instability and ephemeral balance. This appearance of fragility stretches the works into a dimension which is effortlessly poetic.

The works exhibited at Art:Concept are like a documentation of the artist's personalized transactions as well as of the viewer's transitions through spaces. It's hard to understand if the real artwork is the objects or the spaces they frame and Sibony appears to leave the issue unresolved. In this way, he leaves the interpretation open to the public, who might try to decode Sibony's messages, or might prefer the simple pleasure walking through the work. Nevertheless the artist takes advantage of his staged accidents to once again open the debate about the status of an artwork and the role of the artist.

Gedi Sibony's work has been seen in the 2006 Whitney Biennial as well as the PS1's "Greater New York" and at the Wrong Gallery and he also has an upcoming solo show at Midway Contemporary in Minneapolis. Bibliography includes Flash Art International, Artforum, The New York Times,The Wrong Times and the upcoming Cream, published by Phaidon. Art:Concept is proud to present his first solo show in Europe.
