This is a retrospective exhibition of the work of Michelangelo Pistoletto which ranges in scope from two 1960 self-portraits to his most recent interventions, which under the title Progetto Arte set out to provoke reflection on contemporary art. The show thus traces a narrative thread which runs from the image of the artist and the initial pictorial representation of this to the depiction of the artist as promoter of a different way of thinking and seeing the world around us.
The exhibition itinerary takes in all of the most significant moments of his career, as during the sixties and seventies when he was recognized as one of the leading exponents of arte povera in Italy, although his subsequent move towards other, more theoretical concerns has considerably distanced him from that current. His experiences in the fields of theatre and music, the product of his interest in action and participation in the late sixties, are also reflected in this section of the show.
One part of the exhibition, that which analyses the theme of the mirror and its relations with painting and sculpture, has been produced in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, where it will be shown from the 17th of October 1999 until the 2nd of January 2000. It is intended that after its presentation at the MACBA the exhibition will go out on tour, starting in
the spring of 2000, to other museums, such as the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyons.
