Signs of Memory: Project Pink Windows
The Signs of Memory Project (Window Project) was born in 2000 at Uragawara (Japan), a village with excessively declining population.
In February 2004, Auguststrasse in Berlin became the setting of the project. On 300 pink panels, texts and illustrating drawings based on interviews with the inhabitants of the historic buildings were displayed in the windows along the street. Since then, Hara realized similar projects in Münster, Wiesbaden and other German cities as well as internationally, for example in the Echigo-Tsumaari Art Triennale in Japan or the Singapore Biennale 2006.
The conversation with the people is always at the center of those projects. Their memories, their life stories and the histories of the buildings they live in form the basis of the artwork. Combined with symbolical drawings, extracts from the interviews are presented on bright pink panels in the windows of private or public buildings. While virtually closing off the buildings this way, at the same time the drawings open up the interior to the public. Thus, the panels make the dialogue between artist and inhabitant and the hidden histories of the buildings accessible to the viewer and blur the borders between inside and outside, private and public, past and present.
Opening on the 30th March 2007, 7 p.m.
