Moran's understated abstractions are characterized by a minimal palette: warm hues of ochre and brown, muted grays and blues or gauzy yellows convey to the viewer the melancholic impression of the filter of memory and time.
Haim Chanin Fine Arts is pleased to announce the gallery’s first solo
exhibition of New York artist Paul Moran, on view from September 20
through November 1, 2008. The opening reception will take place on
Saturday, September 20, 2008, from 7-9 PM in presence of the artist. The
exhibition will feature twelve oil on canvas and board, along with a
selection of works on paper and photographs.
Paul Moran’s understated abstractions are characterized by a minimal
palette: warm hues of ochre and brown, muted grays and blues or gauzy
yellows convey to the viewer the melancholic impression of the filter of
memory and time. Moran’s works draw quietly "on emotion, on an undefined
reminiscence" (D. Wilk), leaving to the viewer the task to create one’s own
interpretation.
As Helen A. Harrison notes in The New York Times, Moran builds up
"modulated atmospheric paintings that exploit the translucency of thinned
oil paint. In the spirit of the 19th-century Tonalist painters, but more
abstractly, his dreamy canvases evoke imaginary landscapes illuminated by
mysterious diffused light".
Born in Philadelphia, Paul Moran received his training at the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts. He has had numerous exhibitions in Europe and in
the United States, including most recently a solo exhibition of his
photographs at the Bartholdi Museum, Colmar (France) on view until November
2008, and group exhibitions at the Islip Art Museum, Long Island, New York,
the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (Germany),
among others.
