Reckoning. After immensely ambitious site-specific installations in Europe and the US, for this solo exhibition the artist turns to potent, yet petite, paintings on paper, in which whole worlds are contained.
The Kravets/Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce RECKONING, a solo
exhibition exhibition of new paintings by Charlie Roberts opening on
Thursday, December 11 and running through Januray 17, 2009.
In the very recent past, the energetic young artist Charlie Roberts
has run the gamut from small drawings and paintings to massive
sculpture and installation. Forays into music and film production
provide a constant stream of inspiration in Charlie's endless and
dynamic drive to create.
But, every now and then, an artist returns
to where it all started, in a RECKONING of sorts. After immensely
ambitious site-specific installations in Europe and the US, Roberts
turns to potent, yet petite, paintings on paper. In each intimate
painting, whole worlds are contained. In one work Lilliputian men
scramble around in a frenzy of activity. In another, art historic
works are packed into what appears to be a dream studio. Pop culture
continues to inspire, but the paintings are more contained in their
epic historic references. Each culturally packed vignette reminds the
viewer of the cyclical nature of events.
Charlie Roberts was born in Kansas and currently lives and works in
Oslo, Norway. He was recently included in “Sonsbeek 2008: Grandeur,”
curated by Anna Tilroe in Arnhem, The Netherlands, as well as in “The
Incomplete” at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. He recently had a
solo show "Mambo Jambo: Cabinet of the Cosmos," at Rice University
Art Gallery curated by Kimberly Davenport in Dallas, TX. Charlie has
had recent gallery exhibitions in Stocklholm at Magnus Karlsson, Vous
Etes Ici in Amsterdam and at Richard Heller in Los Angeles.
