Casey Kaplan is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of Jonathan Monk, “The Inflated Deflated”, opening May 7th.

By doing this I think I also created something original and certainly something very different to what I was re-presenting. In the late 1980’s, while Jonathan Monk began art school in Glasgow, Jeff Koons exhibited a highly polished stainless steel cast from an inflated, plastic, blow up Easter bunny, entitled “Rabbit”, 1986 at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York.
The “Rabbit” is an icon of its era. For Monk’s 6th solo exhibition in New York with the gallery, the artist will present his own version of Koons’ infamous rabbit in five different poses. Similarly cast in stainless steel, Monk’s bunnies are frozen moments in time that capture five different states of deflation of what was once the taut, inflated child’s toy. With each exhalation of air, the plastic bunny droops, folds, and eventually rests in an undulating heap, recalling one of Henry Moore’s classic bronze reclining nude sculptures.
A formal press release will accompany the exhibition, which will include other important new artworks.
It will be released two weeks prior to the opening on the 7th of May.
