Joanne Yanoff: (in)vulnerable

Nikolai Fine Art, New York

comunicato stampa

Nikolai Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of (in)vulnerable, a new installation-based work by Santa Fe artist, Joanne Yanoff. (in)vulnerable, the artist's first one-person exhibition in New York City, will be on view May 11 through June 10, 2000.

Joanne Yanoff's new series expands on themes of the body and wounds that the artist began investigating via her paintings of the mid 1990s. In her new solo exhibition, photo-based images and sculpture cohere in an installation that investigates the vulnerability of the body and mind.

Life-size black-and-white photographs portray parts of the artist's body bound in protective devices such as upper body pads and boxing gloves. The protective devices are formed with leather, feathers, and salt, a substance that both corrodes and preserves. The photographs are manipulated by scraping away at the surface and using paint, bleach, salt, and oil so as to add not only texture, but also a sense of fragility and deterioration.

Upon entering the gallery, one's movements through the space are dictated by the installation. Sixteen life-size hollow, punching bags encrusted with salt hang ethereally from rusty chains. The surfaces, marked with slits, holes, dents, and bruises, suggest both strength and vulnerability. Each element of Yanoff's provocative work, whether sculptural or photo-based, explores the tension between protection and danger.
