Loop video art fair

After six successful years, the 2009 festival, which will take place in Barcelona from May 21 to May 31, will explore the dialogue and intersections between video art and other arts disciplines such as dance, film, music and literature. Loop continues with its three-part structure – Festival, Fair and Panels – that fills Barcelona with projects ranging from the latest works by acclaimed artists to innovative pieces by up-and-coming artists, as well as recovering emblematic works from video art history and presenting them to a wide audience.

Continuing in its line of promoting alliances between different cultural centres and institutions, this year LOOP presents an exceptional collaboration. A selection of works from the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (one of the largest collections in France) will be exhibited at the Fundación Godia in dialogue with the pieces from the collection of this Barcelona establishment. The exhibition, to be called “Décadrages”, has been developed exclusively for LOOP by Pascale Cassagnau, head of digital arts at the French Ministry of Culture, who has curated this special project. Another of these collaborations will involve Ars Santa Mónica hosting “Pas d’histoires”, an exhibition from the prestigious South London Gallery that will bring a selection of works by French experimental filmmakers and artists to Barcelona.

Barcelona's major cultural centres will once again join the Festival activities through specific screenings and programs. In addition, this year some venues will be premiering new works to coincide with LOOP, such as the MACBA, for example, which will present the Spanish premiere of “Double Take”, the latest work by Johan Grimonprez. Annika Larsson’s “Dolls” is another work to premiere in Spain on Loop. This piece of the well-known Swedish artist will be shown at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, an original space that has joined the Festival one more year.

Along with these offerings, this year’s LOOP promotes the importance of opportunities for sharing ideas and debate, and establishes itself as the key event for discussions on the future of video art that give a voice to international experts and up-and-coming talents who are taking their first steps in the contemporary creation scene.

There are two LOOP sections that make this diversity possible and, together with the Festival and the Fair, offer an overall vision of the discipline: the Panels and the Universities program. The first of these, which has been part of the LOOP program from the start, seeks to encourage reflection around the principal issues posed by this still-new discipline, guided by curators, collectors, artists and directors of museums and cultural centres. Essentially, the Panels section aims to stimulate discussions with leading professionals, and in LOOP’s seventh year the program will include presentations by Stuart Comer (Film Curator at the Tate Modern, London), Patricia Sandretto (director of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo per l'Arte de Turín) and the artists Aernnout Mik and Harun Farocki, among others. Meanwhile, the section set aside for universities is set to expand this year to include projects by students from 27 educational centres from over a dozen countries around the world.

The Fair will take place on May 28, 29 and 30. Once again, the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas will host the event, and in the privacy of its rooms more than forty galleries will present the works of international artists.

LOOP is an accessible initiative aimed at citizens, which welcomes videoart professionals as well as the general public interested in art and culture. An opportunity for coming together and for debate, a point of convergence for sharing the visions and ideas around videoart generated by the different participants and agents involved.
