Its Form Follows Your Performance consists of 25 "renovations" to existing spaces. Rather than changing the physical attributes of the space, the architect makes slight modifications to the way that occupants behave in it. The changes are aimed at presenting occupants with interpretive cues for how they should behave.
Form Follows Function became a battle cry for 20th century modern architects world wide. In our century, when modernism is understood as plural rather than singular, the ideological imperatives must be reframed. Function is a term associated with proscriptive assignment of what people do in an architectural space. Performance, with its links to artistic endeavors, implies interpretation. An architecture forming around performance rather than function requires those who enter to make a decision about how they behave in it, and in this sense themselves become the architects.
Its Form Follows Your Performance at the Gallery magnus müller will consist of 25 “renovations” to existing spaces. Rather than changing the physical attributes of the space, however, the architect Alex Schweder will make slight modifications to the way that occupants behave in it. Any changes to the physical qualities of the space will be small and aimed at presenting occupants with interpretive cues for how they should behave. Each renovation will be specifically made for each client and based on an initial video taped interview in the site of the space to be renovated.
