The exhibition examines the works of a group of artists that have innovative techniques of "drawing". Their artistic proposals do no fit anymore in close categories such as painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video or installation. Some, as Marta Blasco and Monica Fuster, incorporates sound compositions specifically created for their video-installation and engravings by Felipe Hernandez and Pedro Tous. Curated by Pilar Ribal.

In 1978, Rosalind Krauss published her famous article entitled "Sculpture in the expanded field", opening contemporary art to the opportunity of developing all traditional languages by means of hybridism, fusion of media and a new understanding of space as part of the artwork. After more than three decades of continuous "expansion", many artistic proposals do no fit anymore in close categories such as painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, video or installation.
"Expanded Drawing" examines the works of a selected group of artists that have innovative techniques of "drawing". With their sensitive conception of drawing as an "expanded" possibility of analyzing the world and the artistic languages, these artists sign a very meaningful contribution to contemporary creation. Some, as Marta Blasco and Mònica Fuster, incorporates sound compositions specifically created for their video-installation and engravings by Felipe Hernández and Pedro Tous.
For Luis Amavisca drawing is a basic tool of creation that he incorporates in his mainly poetic visual fictions in dialogue with the space. Diann Bauer, makes of the concept of classical and non-classical more than a question mark, but a real challenge: a possibility to rethink the act of representing and building images of sense. With her mysterious "backdrawings" and her powerful "pencil portraits" Marta Blasco makes of the image of a drawing fading away a metaphorical reflection about the process of reminding and forgetting that happens in our minds. Subtle, almost invisible in the context of his collage of images, drawing is a key element in Jacobo Castellano's works on paper. Similarly, Mònica Fuster explores all physical and nonphysical possiblities of drawing, including shadow creating and sound echoes. With his drawing interventions, Fernando Gutiérrez explores spatial presence and entity of drawing and its relation with the viewers, making of them an active part of his own world of fantasy.
Among the most outstanding multimedia European artists, the poetic collage-drawings of Paloma Navares take us to the borders of the visible, as for her, drawing may be a substance, a trace, just words, only a gesture. Emotive and mysterious, all works of Elena Rendeiro are conceived as fragments of experiences, thoughts or sensations. Drawing is for her a basic instrument of reflection, a kind of mental representation of brain’s activity, always in process. Minimalist in appearance, Amparo Sard’s "hand perforated" drawings are considered to be among the most innovative interpretations of drawing’s visual vibration. Her exquisite compositions speak not only about symbols or iconographies but about this innate impulse of mankind to imagine and (re)create old and new myths. Considered to be among the most interesting current video-artists, Mariana Vassileva’s mirror drawings perfectly exemplify the idea of expansion of all languages that encourages this project, making of her pieces the paradigm of contemporary creation’s hybridism and expansion.
