On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, FINE ART FAIR invites its visitors to experience a wealth of artworks in different styles, epochs and genres. This prestigious boutique event opens its doors at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (museum of decorative arts) in Hamburg from 1 October to 4 October 2009. Launched under private management in 2000, FINE ART FAIR has emerged as one of the most successful international art fairs of its kind. It offers a distinctive appeal and displays a consistently high level of quality.
Nineteen leading international art dealers, several of whom exhibit regularly at TEFAF in Maastricht, are participating. They will be showcasing paintings, fine furniture and objects ranging from antiquities to contemporary art. The aim of the FAIR is to present artworks of the highest calibre in a harmonious and elegant setting. The focus is on a visitor-friendly and inviting ambience offering excellent client services. The spacious, open layout of the exhibition with its individual wall elements rather than traditional fair booths offers art collectors and enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy a wealth of objects from different cultures and periods. The FAIR is also designed to attract and inspire young visitors who will discover new viewpoints through the interaction of antiques, antiquities and modern art.

This year, FINE ART FAIR focuses on the theme of Music. It will pay homage to the celebrated Sammlung Beurmann with its exceptional collection of antique keyboard instruments. The Collection will be on view at the FAIR. A supporting programme of concerts performed on unique historical instruments will be staged in cooperation with Steinway & Sons - the celebrated Hamburg-based manufacturer of musical instruments - and Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, a well-known cultural foundation sponsoring young musicians.

Today, the fascination and value of the art market are as strong as ever. Particularly in economically difficult times, exceptional quality and expertise are of key importance – as the high standards of FINE ART FAIR Hamburg 2009 demonstrate.

FINE ART FAIR features five categories of exhibit– Furniture and Decorative Arts, Non-European and Ancient Art, Jewellery, Painting and Photography and Works of Art on Paper.

The Furniture and Decorative Arts section showcases a range of objects from antiquities to twentieth-century design. One highlight is the famous chair "No. 14" designed by Michel THONET in 1856. It is being shown by SEBASTIAN JACOBI of Bad Ems. The piece is from the collection of the Royal House of Hanover. This distinguished provenance accounts for only six chairs, one of which is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
Also exhibiting in this section are Hamburg-based specialists FRANK C. MÖLLER who deal in fine European eighteenth and nineteenth-century furniture. The beautifully carved Rococo chair from the workshop of Abraham Roentgen is an example of the highest quality in German eighteenth-century furniture-making. Its counterpart is in the collection of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. HUBERTUS ERFURT, a young art dealer from Cologne, also specialisez in eighteenth and nineteenth-century furniture. He is proud to present an elaborately carved Regency music stand from the workshop of Gillows of Lancaster among other rare and beautiful objects. Art dealer GROBUSCH from Aachen is a newcomer to FINE ART FAIR. Grobusch specialises in important Art Deco glass objects and will be presenting many fine examples of the period, notably a cylinder-shaped vase “Iris” designed by Emile Gallé (78,000 €) and an attractive collector’s vase by Argy-Rousseau dating from 1920 showing a spider’s web (12,800 €). A diverse range of paintings, European furniture and works of art from medieval times to the early twentieth century can be found at GALERIE VON NEGELEIN. The gallery was established in Kiel over 45 years ago and focuses on nineteenth-century paintings and North German furniture. One important exhibit is an excellently preserved, early classicistic escritoire from around 1780 made by the Altona manufacturer KÖSTER.

NON-EUROPEAN AND ANCIENT ART. Non-European works of art are offered by gallerist DIERK DIERKING of Cologne. He has figures and masks are of the highest quality and their authenticity has been carefully verified. GORDIAN WEBER from Cologne features a fine range of antiquities from Egypt and Greece such as a limestone relief representing the ancient Egyptian god Thot The piece dates around 500 BC. He also has a Greek terracotta statuette of Pan dateable to the fourth century BC. Showing at the Fair for the first time is Brussels dealer GEORGIA CRISCHILLES. She is offering objects and jewellery from South East Asia. Exhibits include a beautiful Javanese gold bracelet and a bronze cup, both from the perioid of the Majapahit Empire, 9th to 11th century. Another newcomer from Belgium is MING-K’I, a gallery specialising in antique objects from China and Meso-America.

JEWELLERY. Hamburg-based jewellery specialists HANSEN will also be making their Fair debut. They are bringing a selection of fine and rare antique jewellery. The firm has been in family hands since 1814 and looks back on a distinguished history. In 1888 it was appointed Court Jewelmaker in the City of Kiel.

PAINTING AND PHOTOGRAPHY. A special highlight of the fine art section is the exhibit of 40 works by the painter Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) staged by the Düsseldorf-based gallery BECK & EGGELING. Works range from the artist’s early period through to late pieces and represent a diversity of techniques. BROCKSTEDT (Hamburg/Berlin) are bringing twentieth-century paintings, drawings, watercolours and sculpture. A hghlight is a paper collage by Kurt Schwitters. Executed in 1920, it was last exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Basel (165,000 €). Another highly impressive work is the painting “Nue à la frégate” by Félix Vallotton dating from 1916 (105,000 €). London art dealer WILLIAM THUILLIER has been working out of his Mayfair gallery for 23 years. He specializes in Old Master paintings and drawings. Among his clients are the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain. At FINE ART FAIR he is showing a Capriccio Landscape by Apollonio Domenichini representing classical architecture and an Architectural Capriccio with figures outside a temple by the seventeenth-century master Alessandro Salucci. Exhibiting for the first time this year is the Berlin dealer JÖRG MAASS. The gallery specialises in Expressionist prints and classical photography. It is currently showing a group of photographs titled “From Brassai to Cindy Sherman”.
In the photography section, Hamburg dealer FLO PETERS, a first-time exhibitor at TEFAF Maastricht in 2009, adds further highlights. Peters is showing a range of early photographs and contemporary work in black and white. One remarkable piece is Herbert List's vintage gelatine silver print titled “Ashtray”,1936 (19,000 €). Internationally renowned dealers LE CLAIRE KUNST (Hamburg) have an impressive selection of eighteenth and nineteenth-century drawings, watercolours and paintings. Highlights are an attractive Gustav Klimt drawing - “Reclining nude”, executed in 1902 - and a very fine pastel by Max Liebermann depicting the artist’s garden at Berlin-Wannsee.

WORKS OF ART ON PAPER are increasingly in demand, especially among young collectors. FINE ART FAIR showcases several dealers in this category. Exhibiting for the third time are Düsseldorf / New York dealers C. G. BOERNER. They are showing drawings and prints dating from the fifteenth century through the Expressionism. The focus is on artists of Dürer’s time, etchings by Rembrandt and nineteenth-century works. A chalk drawing on bright blue paper by Johann Georg von Dillis dating from 1822 is one of the star exhibits. Hamburg-based DR. MARTIN MOELLER has paintings, Master drawings and watercolours from the sixteenth to early twentieth centuries. THOLE ROTERMUND, also Hamburg-based, is offering twentieth-century works of art on paper. His focus is on German Expressionism and modern masters. A watercolour by Lyonel Feininger with the title “Vier-Mast-Bark Abraham Rydberg” , executed in 1934, expresses the artist’s interest in ships and the sea (86,000 €). His watercolours are highly valued by collectors.
