THINGS WE DON'T UNDERSTAND

What characterizes the aesthetic production of artists who are concerned with socio-political questions? What is the difference between artistic strategies and social work when both address social matters? This exhibition explores these currently contested fundamental questions of artistic production. The exhibition on the one hand documents the different fields in which the artists are active (feminism, ecology, fighting racism). Furthermore it examines the extent to which the artistic approach can recognize its potential outside of a purely utilitarian paradigm. The moment of irritation that an artwork might generate raises the possibility of new perspectives on the world through "things we don?t understand."

This exhibition focuses primarily on artists of the younger generation: Ines Doujak (Austria), Peter Friedl (Austria), Inigo Manglano-Ovalle (USA), Nina Menkes (USA), Alice Ohneland (Germany), Alejandra Riera (France). The historical dimension of these concerns is also represented, however, by Eleanor Antin (USA) and Harun Farocki (Germany), two artists whose productions extend back to the 60s and 70s, respectively.

An exhibition catalogue will be published containing articles by Christian Kravagna (on artistic autonomy) and Kaja Silverman (on the communication of forms), and an essay by the exhibition?s guest curators Ruth Noack and Roger M. Buergel.
