Zafos Xagoraris and the new bell towers of Emilia Romagna
by Francesco Lucifora
With the aim of shortening distances by means of sound and sparking revolutions starting from public interventions, Zafos Xagoraris, back from Siracusa, presents Moving Bell Towers, a stimulating project for dispari&dispari
Moving Bell Towers is the title of the project by Zafos Xagoraris for dispari&dispari project, curated by Andrea Sassi. The encounter between a space, devoted to explicit connections linking contemporary art and society, and an artist able to relate to and include the community at the heart of his works, could not fail but refer to the recent and tragic events in the Emilia Romagna region. On 20th May 2012, at 04:03 local time, a strong magnitude MI5,9 e Mw5,86 shock was recorded in Finale Emilia and was the start of a series of earthquakes that devastated Emilia Romagna, forcing entire communities to a precarious and fearful day-to-day existence. Zafos Xagoraris has erected three towers made up of Innocenti scaffolding tubes, the same tubes often used to prop up unsafe buildings. The towers, from five to seven metres high and complete with wheels, are part of a video filmed at the Po, the river that is considered a strong identity symbol of the territory; hence the idea of the Greek artist for a mobile device that can be quickly dismantled and reassembled in other situations. Bells of different weight and acoustic power made in the city of Castelnovo ne' Monti at the Fonderia Capanni, are mounted on each tower. The bell is one of the elements that Xagoraris has included in other public installations in Cyprus, Ushuaia and Palermo. The re-composition in mobile bell towers takes on a key value.
Moving Bell Towers follows a two-fold design intent: the stimulating idea of replacing the bell towers destroyed by the earthquake, thus partly re-establishing normality in many cities, and the juxtaposing of the propagation of the sound of the bell with the expanding of the telluric force – indeed, both waves spread in a circle following the sequence of sound and vibration. The toll of one of the towers marks the beginning of the seismic shocks and the other bells ring out the codes related to the involved cities and inhabitants, the bell tower takes on the role of keeping the focus on the real events. The inside and the outside(1), as Massimiliano Scuderi writes, author of the texts for this project of dispari&dispari, represent two of the main elements of Xagoraris’ research and express the need of the continuous definition of a limit: the towers with the bells redraw the physical boundaries destroyed by the calamity, with the hope of reconnecting people with the wounded places.
Moving Bell Towers and Legal text and Public spaces Analytic Series, the latter presented at MAR modulo a residenza recently set up in Siracusa, are interventions open to future modifications.
